We have long debated the topic of the best player in the world and the names of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated the discussion for some time. However, as both players come towards the end of their career, who is the top man at present in world football?

Many fans will continue to make a case for Messi as being the best player in the world. Having moved to Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona, the Argentine forward faces a new challenge at club level for the first time in his career.

Due to injury and international commitments, Messi has not featured regularly for PSG this season but he came good in the Champions League against Manchester City, scoring a wonderful goal.

Other players may score more goals than Messi this season but his overall creativity on the pitch is still enormous.

Messi’s new club teammate, Kylian Mbappe already has a World Cup winners medal to his name and is without doubt one of the great attacking talents in world football today.

In terms of excitement when a player gets the ball, especially when on the counter-attack, is there a more thrilling player than Mbappe? The Frenchman gets people off their seat in almost every game he plays and his fitness levels are excellent, as he continues to play for club and country on a regular basis.

Some would say Erling Haaland is closing in on the title of best player in the world and the Borussia Dortmund striker has a phenomenal goal scoring record for a young player.

Every time he takes to the pitch it seems like a goal is inevitable and Haaland is surely going to break goal scoring records if he continues at his current rate.

Remaining in the Bundesliga and Robert Lewandowski is another striker who is at the top of his game and has been for some time.

The Polish international has a return of 307 goals in 339 appearances for Bayern Munich at the time of writing which is a stunning record and he has more left in the tank, even at 33 years old.

Lewandowski has scored 13 goals in 10 games for Bayern Munich this season, ahead of their clash with Bayer Leverkusen on the 17th of October.

However, if you speak to the manager of Liverpool, he believes the best player in the world right now is Mohamed Salah. Jurgen Klopp spoke after Liverpool destroyed Watford 5-0 in the Premier League on Saturday, during which Salah scored his second goal of the season contender and we are only in October.

One look at the statistics shows Salah is providing a goal or assist on average every 65 minutes this season and he looks determined to not only take Liverpool to the Premier League title but also to finish the season as top goal scorer in the Premier League.

Salah is on fire but is he currently the best player in the world?
