Is the current crop of Premier League strikers the best in history?

Following the return of Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku, the Premier League has been blessed with the addition of not one, but two world-class strikers.

Of course, England’s top tier was already home to multiple world-class strikers before Ronaldo and Lukaku decided to make a comeback.

But when you throw the recent arrivals into the mix, it could be argued that the current crop of Premier League strikers is the best ever.

Ronaldo and Lukaku have joined star names such as Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Dominic Calvert Lewin.

Roberto Firmino, Gabriel Jesus, Timo Werner, Edinson Cavani, Danny Ings, Patrick Bamford, Richarlison, Anthony Martial and Raul Jiminez are all honourable mentions, too.

So, where does the current crop of forwards rank among the list of great Premier League striker pools? Let’s look back through the history books.

The inaugural Premier League season back in 1992/93 featured the likes of Alan Shearer, Teddy Sheringham, Les Ferdinand, Ian Wright and Eric Cantona.

Fast-forward to the 1997/98 campaign – Michael Owen, Dion Dublin, Chris Sutton, Dennis Bergkamp, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Andy Cole were among the top scorers.

The 2003/04 season – Arsenal's “invincibles” campaign – saw star names such as Thierry Henry, Louis Saha, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Nicolas Anelka and Robbie Keane emerge.

In 2009/10, we got to enjoy legendary strikers like Cristiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogba, Wayne Rooney, Carlos Teves, Fernando Torres and Emmanuel Adebayor.

2014/15 was another great Premier League season for top forwards, with Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane, Diego Costa, Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud leading the goalscoring charts.

At the end of the day, it is very difficult to compare the current crop of Premier League strikers with previous generations.

After all, they all played in different eras against different opponents, meaning it wouldn’t be entirely fair to compare them with one another.

However, there is a strong argument to say that the current clutch of Premier League strikers is the best we have ever seen.

Led by Ronaldo, Lukaku and Kane, and backed up by the likes of Vardy, Cavani, Firmino and Aubameyang, the present-day batch of Premier League strikers could well be the best in history.
