Euro 2020 Squad Guide and Analysis: Poland

Euro 2020 Squad Guide and Analysis: Poland
    09/06/21 2242

Spearheaded by the imperious Robert Lewandowski, Poland will be quietly confident of reaching the latter stages of the knockout phase, with ex-Portugal international Paulo Sausa at the helm.

    • Manager: Paulo Sousa

    • Current FIFA World Ranking: 21st

    • Best European Championship finish: Quarter-Finals (2016)

Poland qualified for their first European Championship back in 2008 but failed to make it out of their group at their first two tournaments. Last time around, they reached the last eight in France.

Let’s see what the current Poland squad is capable of achieving.

    • Poland’s Euro 2020 Squad

Goalkeepers: Lukasz Fabianski (West Ham), Wojciech Szczesny (Juventus), Lukasz Skorupski (Bologna).

Defenders: Jan Bednarek (Southampton), Bartosz Bereszynski (Sampdoria), Pawel Dawidowicz (Verona), Kamil Glik (Benevento), Michal Helik (Barnsley), Tomasz Kedziora (Dynamo Kyiv), Kamil Piatkowski (Rakow Czestochowa), Tymoteusz Puchacz (Lech Poznan), Maciej Rybus (Lokomotiv Moskva).

Midfielders: Przemyslaw Frankowski (Chicago Fire), Kamil Jozwiak (Derby), Mateusz Klich (Leeds), Kacper Kozlowski (Pogon Szczecin), Grzegorz Krychowiak (Lokomotiv Moskva), Karol Linetty (Torino), Jakub Moder (Brighton), Przemysław Placheta (Norwich), Piotr Zielinski (Napoli).

Forwards: Dawid Kownacki (Fortuna Dusseldorf), Robert Lewandowski (Bayern), Arkadiusz Milik (Marseille), Karol Swiderski (PAOK), Jakub Swierczok (Piast Gliwice).

    • Who Will Poland Face in Group E?

Poland begin their Euro 2020 journey with a favourable tie against Group E underdogs Slovakia on June 14. The Eagles then come up against group favourites Spain on June 19.

Poland then meet Sweden in Russia on June 23 for what is likely to be a hugely decisive game in the race for a top-two spot.

    • Poland’s Star Player

Robert Lewandowski: Who else? Arguably the best striker in world football, Lewandowski is more capable of humiliating even the best defenders at Euro 2020.

The Bayern Munich marksman heads into the tournament on the back of another outrageous season, having bagged 41 goals in 29 Bundesliga games en route to clinching the title.

    • How Far Can Poland Go?

Poland should be able to get out of their group, either in second place or as one of the highest-ranked third-place teams. However, they could struggle to reach the quarter-finals.

Lewandowski and co. should reach the last 16, but they are likely to find it difficult to go any further.

    Prediction: Round of 16
