You probably won’t be surprised to learn that stars such as Ederson and Thibaut Courtois are among the goalkeepers with the most clean sheets in Europe’s top five leagues this season. However, there is an unlikely name at the top of the list.

Here are the top five goalkeepers who have achieved the most shutouts across the big five European leagues in 2020/21.

    • Mike Maignan (Lille) – 20 clean sheets

It’s fair to say that Mike Maignan has been nothing short of immense this season. The 25-year-old has played every single second of Lille’s 36 league games, conceding just 22 goals along the way.

Unsurprisingly, Lille boast the best defensive record in the French top-flight. Thanks to Maignan’s brilliance, Les Dogues are on course to clinch their first Ligue 1 titles since 2011.

    • Ederson (Manchester City) – 18 clean sheets

It is no real surprise to see Ederson on this list, is it? After all, the Manchester City star is widely regarded as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.

The Brazilian has kept 18 clean sheets in 34 EPL matches this term, conceding 25 goals in the process. Needless to say, he has played a pivotal role in Man City’s title push.

    • Jan Oblak (Atletico Madrid) – 18 clean sheets

If Atletico Madrid do end up winning the La Liga title this season, Jan Oblak will surely be recognised for his heroics between the sticks.

With just three games to go, Diego Simeone’s side are two points clear of second-place Real Madrid and third-place Barcelona. Oblak has only conceded 22 goals in 35 matches.

    • Edouard Mendy (Chelsea) – 16 clean sheets

Edouard Mendy has only played 29 of Chelsea’s 35 Premier League games this season. Still, he currently finds himself second on the EPL’s clean sheet leaderboard.

The Blues have clearly upped their game since Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard back in January, and Mendy has been at the heart of the team’s defensive improvements.

    • Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid) – 16 clean sheets

Thibaut Courtois clinched the La Liga Golden Glove last season, achieving 18 shutouts in 34 matches. This time around, the giant Belgian shot-stopper is two clean sheets shy of last term’s record.

Courtois still has three games to play this season, so he could still emulate last year’s achievements. If he does, Real Madrid could overtake Atletico and seal back-to-back titles.
