Englishman to Finish as Top Goal Scorer?

Englishman to Finish as Top Goal Scorer?
    03/12/19 2705

Last season in the Premier League we had a 3 way tie for the Golden Boot. Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang each finished the 2018/19 season with 22 goals to their name and shared the award.

It was the first time since 2010/11, when Dimitar Berbatov and Carlos Tevez finished with 20 goals each, that more than one player has ended the season as top goal scorer.

Could we be in for another tie come the end of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign or will one player lead the way?

Only twice in the past 19 seasons has an English player won the Golden Boot in the Premier League. In the 2015/16 and 2016/17 season, Harry Kane finished as the top goal scorer and he is the only English player of the past 19 seasons to win the award but could that be about to change?

Leicester City are currently on course to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season and may even challenge for the title. One of the many reasons The Foxes have been performing so well is the goals of Jamie Vardy. The English striker finished second, just one goal behind Harry Kane in the 2015/16 season, which was the season Leicester City won the Premier League title. If they are to mount another challenge in this campaign, the continued goals of Vardy will be vital and on current form he makes a good bet to finish the season as top goal scorer.

However, there is another English striker who has enjoyed a good start to the 2019/20 Premier League campaign and his name is Tammy Abraham. The Chelsea forward has been trusted as the main striker by manager Frank Lampard this season and has rewarded the new Chelsea boss with plenty of goals. Chelsea have enjoyed a decent start to the season and that has been in large part due to the goals of Abraham. If he can remain fit, Abraham could easily score 20 plus goals in the Premier League this season and that has to put him in contention for the Golden Boot.

Last season, Raheem Sterling enjoyed an excellent campaign for Manchester City as they went on to win the Premier League title. The England international finished the season with 17 Premier League goals, 5 goals behind the eventual winners. However, Sterling has started the 2019/20 season in good goal scoring form and is very much in contention to finish the season as the top goal scorer. With Sergio Aguero facing a spell on the sidelines, it is unlikely Sterling is going to be rotated out of the starting XI as much as he would have been if the Argentine was fit.

The goals of Sterling are going to be vital for Manchester City if they are to come close to retaining their title this season. However, in terms of the Golden Boot award we cannot rule out Harry Kane, who is now under the guidance of Jose Mourinho at Tottenham Hotspur. If Spurs begin firing again in front of goal, expect to see Kane regularly on the score sheet.
