Huddersfield are back in the Championship following a humiliating season in the Premier League.
The club surprised everyone with their promotion to the top-flight in 2018 but surprised very few when they were relegated after just one season in the top-flight.
With the Terriers back in England’s second tier, they will be hoping to bounce straight back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
Huddersfield finished rock bottom of the Premier League last season after managing to pick up just sixteen points.
Three wins and seven draws saw the Terriers record the joint-earliest relegation to the Championship with six matches still remaining in the campaign.
After nearly four years at the John Smith’s Stadium, David Wagner was sacked in January with the club already destined for relegation.
Former Borussia Dortmund II head coach Jan Siewart was brought in to try and save Huddersfield but the damage had already been done.
Jan Siewart’s challenge will be to lift the spirits of his squad following their relegation. Quite often clubs last just one season in the Premier League and then struggle to compete for promotion again.
Huddersfield have lost a number of last season’s standout performers and this could hinder their chances of making an immediate return to the Premier League.
Philip Billing – the 2018/19 Player’s Player of the Year – has left for Bournemouth while Laurent Depoitre, Erik Durm and Chris Lowe have also departed in the summer transfer window.
In their first six fixtures of the new campaign, Huddersfield face last season’s play-off finalists Derby, as well as fellow relegated sides Fulham and Cardiff.
This will be a real test for the club and will also be a good indication as to how the team will cope after so many departures.
Philip Billing - €16.50m to Bournemouth
Tommy Smith - €4.45m to Stoke City
Ramadan Sobhi - Loan to Ahly
Erik Durm - Free to Eintracht Frankfurt
Laurent Depoitre - Free to KAA Gent
Jonas Lossl - Free to Everton
Jack Payne - Free to Lincoln City
Chris Lowe - Undesiclosed to Dynamo Dresden
Danny Williams - Released
The predicted league finish for Huddersfield Town is 8th. The Terriers should record a comfortable top-half finish however their squad isn’t as strong as many of the promotion candidates.
