Newcastle United and Manchester United will meet on Sunday at Wembley as the two look to end their trophy droughts, as it’s now been 68 years since the Magpies last captured any silverware.

The Red Devils have not won a trophy since Jose Mourinho led them to Europa League glory in 2017, and the form of these two makes for a mouthwatering final.

With this in mind, we take a look at the best League Cup finals ever.

    Arsenal vs Swindon - 1969

For what remains one of the only times in English football history where a side from the third tier took on a side in the top tier, as Swindon Town stunned Arsenal in 1969.

Roger Smart was one of the heroes for Swindon that day, as he scored in the first half. The Gunners wouldn't get an equaliser until late on in the game, but Swindon went on to smash Arsenal in the second half as Don Rogers wrote his name in folklore with two goals in extra time.

This League Cup final remains one of the biggest upsets in English football history.

Arsenal vs Luton Town - 1988

Arsenal were the victims of another upset just 19 years on from their loss to Swindon, as Luton Town defeated them in 1988.

The late 80s will always be remembered fondly by Luton fans, as they were in the First Division and they also managed to reach two League Cup finals. In 1988, they finished ninth in the league and they were not favoured to beat the defending League Cup champions Arsenal in the final.

After going 1-0 up following a goal from Brian Stein, Arsenal went on to take the lead after a three-minute spell midway through the second half gave the defending champions a 2-1 lead. Daniel Joseph equalised in the 82nd minute, before chaos erupted after a winner from Stein in the 90th minute

It was also the club's first major trophy in English football.

    Chelsea vs Liverpool - 2005

The 2005 final between Chelsea and Liverpool had a lot surrounding it. Firstly, it was the first chance at silverware for Rafael Benitez at Liverpool and Jose Mourinho at Chelsea. However, it was Steven Gerrard who stole the headlines before the game as it seemed as if he was on the verge of a move to Chelsea.

John Arne Riise opened the scoring with the quickest goal in League Cup final history with a goal after just a few seconds.

Another goal in the game would not come for 79 minutes, and of course, it was Gerrard who scored an own goal for Chelsea. The game then headed to extra time, as Didier Drogba scored just before Mateja Kesman scored for the Blues.

Antonio Nunez brought one back for Liverpool, but the game finished 3-2 in what is arguably the most thrilling final in League Cup history.
