The Community Shield is the traditional curtain raiser for the Premier League season. The fixture pits the Premier League winner against the winner of the FA Cup trophy.

The 2022 edition of the Community Shield will see Premier League champions Manchester City take on FA Cup winners Liverpool.

Manchester City just edged Liverpool in the race for the league title in 2021-22. It is fitting that the two best teams in English football from last season will kick off the new term.

    Community Shield History

The Community Shield was born in 1908 but at the time, it was known as the FA Charity Shield. Even before the Charity Shield’s creation, a trophy was contested by England’s best professional and best amateur teams of the time.

The original trophy was called the Sheriff of London Shield. The FA Charity Shield and later, the Community Shield, evolved out of that original piece of silverware.

In 1908, Manchester United defeated Queens Park Rangers to win the first-ever Community Shield match 4-0 in a replay. The teams played the match at Stamford Bridge, the same location of the first fixture, which ended 1-1.

The shield match was moved to Wembley in 1974 and made the opening match of the new season. In 2002, the fixture’s name was rechristened, the Community Shield.

What is the highest-scoring Community Shield match?

Manchester United defeated Swindon Town 8-4 to win the Charity Shield in 1911. In the year that followed the match, money made from the shield fixture was donated to the Titanic disaster fund.

Which team has played the most Community Shield matches?

Manchester United hold the record for the most appearances in the Community Shield with 30. The Red Devils hold the record for the most wins in the match with 21. Manchester United also hold the record for the most Community Shield losses with nine.

    Don’t overestimate the trophy’s importance

Since the Premier League started in 1992, just eight teams that won the Charity/Community Shield went on to win the league in the same campaign.

    Most Community Shield goals

Eric Cantona holds the record for the most goals scored in the Community Shield with five.

    Most Community Shield player appearances

Ryan Giggs played in 14 Community Shield matches, which is the all-time record.

Most successful players in Community Shield matches

Four players are tied for winning the most Community Shield trophies during their careers. Liverpool and Tottenham goalkeeper Ray Clemence, Arsenal and Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole, Leeds United and Manchester United forward Eric Cantona, and Chelsea and Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech each won six Community Shield trophies.

    Most successful Community Shield manager

Sir Alex Ferguson won nine Community Shield trophies, the most of any manager. Current Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has won three Community Shields, the most of any active coach.

Where is the Community Shield played?

The Community Shield has been played at Wembley Stadium since 1974, except for a number of seasons due to the “new” Wembley being constructed.

For the 2022 Community Shield match, the game will be played at the King Power Stadium in Leicester. The match will take place in Leicester due to Wembley being used on Sunday to host the UEFA Women’s European Championship final.
