Wolfsburg’s aim of qualifying for next season’s Champions League have taken a hit in recent weeks. The Wolves are winless in three of their last four matches in the Bundesliga.

Going into matchday 32, just two points separate Wolfsburg from fifth-place Borussia Dortmund.

On Saturday, Oliver Glasner’s team host Union Berlin, a team that sit just four points behind the Bundesliga’s Europa Conference League qualification place.

Coach Urs Fischer could lead the side into Europe but with just nine points left to play for, Union Berlin must gain maximum points the rest of the way and hope Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach drop points.

Since arriving in the Bundesliga in 2019, Union Berlin have failed to defeat Wolfsburg on three occasions. They have managed two draws in their three league meetings. The teams’ reverse fixture played at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei finished 2-2.

Renato Steffen opened the scoring for Wolfsburg before Union Berlin’s Sheraldo Becker equalised midway through the first half. Robert Andrich put Union Berlin into the lead just after halftime, but Wout Weghorst’s 65th-minute penalty gave Wolfsburg a share of the spoils.

Fischer should have forward Max Kruse fit after he was removed from matchday 31’s game against Werder Bremen at halftime. Leon Dajaku, Sheraldo Becker, Anthony Ujah and Cedric Teuchert are all unlikely to make the squad.

Union Berlin forward Taiwo Awoniyi, on loan from Liverpool, is back in training after three months out. He could feature soon, but this weekend may be too early. Wolfsburg’s Bartosz Bialek and Steffen are sidelined with injury.

Wolfsburg took nine points from the last 18 on offer in the league. Three of their last four games ended in losses and they are struggling to get over the line.

Union Berlin took eight points from the last 18 available in the Bundesliga. Four of their last five games ended without defeat.

Two of the last three matches between Wolfsburg and Union Berlin finished in draws. Both games ended with identical 2-2 scorelines. Will these sides combine for another four-goal thriller split two goals apiece?

It is possible that Wolfsburg and Union Berlin will once again play out a 2-2 draw. Wolfsburg have recorded the league’s fourth-best home points total but are on a two-match home losing streak.

Union Berlin are winless in four straight road games. Both clubs would welcome a score draw on matchday 32.
