Bordeaux face tough assignment against high-flying Monaco

Bordeaux slumped to a third defeat on the trot in the French top flight last time out when they were handed a heavy 4-1 defeat away from home at Saint-Etienne.

Although they now return to their Stade Matmut-Atlantique for this upcoming encounter with Monaco, the hosts face a tough task here.

Bordeaux have now lost nine of their last 11 matches in Ligue 1 with their only respite from this woeful sequence of results coming in the shape of a 3-1 win away from home at basement dwellers, Dijon, but otherwise, it’s been a torrid two and a half months for the hosts.

Needless to say, Bordeaux have steadily dropped down the Ligue 1 table and now find themselves sitting in a disappointing 15th place and just six points above the relegation zone and this doesn’t bode well for the hosts with this visit from Monaco.

To make matters worse, Bordeaux have lost four of their last five matches at home in recent times, losing to Lille, Metz, PSG and Strasbourg and have earned just one point from the last possible 15 on offer thanks to a 0-0 draw with Marseille.

By contrast, Sunday’s visitors, Monaco, are currently riding on a crest of a wave as they’ve registered three league wins on the trot which has thrust the visitors up into 3rd place, just a point behind 2nd placed PSG and just four points adrift of Lille.

Therefore, Monaco are still in the frame for what would have seemed a highly unlikely challenge for this season’s Ligue 1 title before the campaign began but the visitors have produced an impressive set of results this season to date and fully deserve to be in the race for the domestic top flight title.

Monaco have produced a solid and sustained sequence of results which has seen them lose just once in their last 17 matches overall in the French top flight, while results away from home have been equally impressive.

Monaco have won seven out of their last eight matches on the road with their one defeat during this period being a 1-0 loss at Strasbourg but notable wins at Montpellier and best of all, a 2-0 win at PSG, means that the visitors look in good shape to take the spoils this Sunday.
