Napoli can gain narrow win at Sassuolo

Sassuolo play host to Napoli at their MAPEI Stadium on Wednesday night in this midweek Serie A fixture with the hosts looking to put a stop to their decline in form which has produced just one win out of their last seven matches overall in the Italian top flight.

That solitary win in recent weeks for Sassuolo came in the shape of a 2-1 win away from home at bottom placed Crotone, but that’s been the only highlight for Wednesday’s hosts as they’ve had to endure a pretty lean spell of late.

Three defeats against Juventus, Lazio and Spezia have far outweighed the points that Sassuolo have picked up in draws with Parma, Cagliari and Bologna, while results at home haven’t exactly set the world on fire either.

Three wins, five draws and three defeats have been Sassuolo’s return at their MAPEI Stadium so far this season and indeed, the hosts have actually fared better on their travels, picking up six wins from their 12 matches to date.

Along with defender Romagna, Sassuolo also look set to be without forward Boga and midfielder Bourabia for this clash.

Napoli have also produced inconsistent displays throughout this season’s Serie A campaign but the visitors have managed to hold onto their 6th place spot in the Italian top flight as they’ve tended to either win or lose.

Whilst too many draws have slowed Sassuolo down, Napoli have won 14 of their 23 matches so far in this season’s campaign and this has essentially been the difference between these two sides heading into this upcoming midweek encounter.

With five wins out of their last eight matches (the other three being defeats), Napoli have been the right side of the needle in terms of win percentage and this has just about been the case away from home too where the visitors have won 6 and lost 5 of their 11 matches on their travels to date.

Napoli also have previous history on their side as they’ve suffered just one defeat out of the last 11 meetings against Sassuolo, which also includes a 2-1 win in their last visit to the MAPEI Stadium back in December 2019.

The visitors will be without Koulibaly (red card), forward Lozano, Manolas and Petagna but the likes of Insigne (10 goals) and Politano (7 goals) may just fire Napoli to a narrow win here.
