Just 3pts and two positions separate Leverkusen and Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga table ahead of their clash this weekend.
Last time out, Leverkusen claimed an impressive 2-1 home win over Dortmund, while Wolfsburg secured a 2-0 victory away at struggling Mainz. Leverkusen moved 3pts clear of Dortmund with that win and occupy 3rd spot in the table, while Wolfsburg moved back into the top five.
When these two clubs locked horns earlier in the Bundesliga season for their reverse league fixture, nothing could separate the two clubs as they played out a goalless draw. Two of the last three encounters between Leverkusen and Wolfsburg have produced under 2.5 goals and we’re expecting another close game on Saturday.
Bayer Leverkusen have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six matches in all competitions and certainly aren’t in their best run of form right now. Wolfsburg head into this one as the form favourites with three wins, two draws and one defeat in their last six fixtures and have secured 4pts from their last three away games.
Both teams have scored in five of Leverkusen’s last six outings, which doesn’t exactly compliment their defending of late but does suggest they look good going forward.
Two of Wolfsburg’s last three games have seen both teams score and each time that has happened, the game has ended in a stalemate.
Part of the season for Leverkusen’s dip in form of late has certainly come down, in some part, to their current injury list. Wendell, Baumgartlinger, Bellarabi, Weiser, Sven Bender, Arias and Paulinho are all sidelined with injuries and won’t feature against Wolfsburg.
The visitors only doubts for Saturday’s clash are Jeffrey Bruma and Jerome Roussillon, both of whom are expected back in late January.
This game looks set to be very closely fought. The visitor’s don’t lose many games and although they are going up against a Leverkusen side that have impressed this season, the host’s injury concerns suggest that a score draw is the most likely result this weekend.
