The Stadion An der Alten Försterei provides the venue for this intriguing top six clash in the Bundesliga between two of the surprise packages so far in this German top flight season as 5th placed Union Berlin play host to 6th placed Wolfsburg, with both teams eager to break into the top four.
Union Berlin have made a solid start to this Bundesliga campaign and at the halfway stage, the hosts look in a favourable position to make a serious challenge for a top six finish and secure a place in one of the European competitions next season.
The hosts have lost just one out of their last 13 matches which was a 3-1 loss away from home at local rivals Hertha Berlin, but results overall have been consistent and they bring back-to-back wins over Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at home and a 2-0 win at Werder Bremen into this clash.
Union Berlin have lost just once at home all season while also picking up three wins and three draws but this will be a tough assignment against Wolfsburg and the goals market appeals here as five of Union Berlin’s seven home matches have seen both teams score.
Onto Wolfsburg and the visitors have enjoyed a very similar campaign to date to that of their hosts and indeed, only goal difference separates Wolfsburg from Union Berlin prior to this Saturday’s encounter.
However, Wolfsburg’s impressive unbeaten start to this Bundesliga campaign ended recently with an understandable 2-1 defeat away from home at Bayern Munich and although they bounced back with a 1-0 home win over Stuttgart, the visitors suffered a second loss on the trot on the road in last weekend’s 2-0 loss at Borussia Dortmund.
In fact, five of Wolfsburg’s six wins to date in this season’s Bundesliga have been achieved on home turf at their VOLKSWAGEN ARENA where they still remain unbeaten but it’s been a very different story away from home this term.
Wolfsburg have collected just the one win on their travels so far this season which came in the shape of a 2-0 win at Schalke but the prospects of an away win here do seem slim; however, goals look to be on the cards as five of Wolfsburg’s seven away matches have also seen both teams score.
This could therefore be a tight tussle but both teams look set to score here.
