Montpellier will head into this Wednesday evening clash against the current Ligue 1 leaders, Lille, having picked up just one win out of their last four matches overall in the French top flight and this upcoming clash doesn’t make things any easier for the hosts either.
On the weekend, Montpellier were held to a 2-2 draw away from home at mid-table Brest and along with recent defeats at home to PSG 3-1 and Metz 2-0, these sub-standard results have meant that Montpellier have dropped down to 6th place despite capturing a 3-2 win away from home at Lens.
Montpellier’s Ligue 1 campaign has been a season of fits and starts as the hosts started with three wins from their first four matches, a period of four matches without a win, and then a four-match winning streak.
They’ve since managed just one win from their last four matches overall while on home turf at their Stade de la Mosson, Montpellier have lost four out of their last five matches with defeats to Nimes, Reims, PSG and Metz.
Lille still remain top of Ligue 1 albeit on goal difference as they shared the points with 2nd placed PSG in a 0-0 draw on the weekend so no change at the top of the domestic top flight prior to these midweek fixtures.
However, as PSG are at home to lowly Strasbourg and seemingly set for all three points, Lille will be particularly eager to also grab all three points away at Montpellier on Wednesday night and having put together a six-match unbeaten run, the visitors look a decent prospect against a struggling Montpellier outfit.
Four wins out of these six matches also places Lille in a strong position after recording victories over Lorient 4-0, Monaco 2-1, Bordeaux 2-1 and a 2-0 win on the road at Dijon while the bigger picture away from home shows that Lille have lost just one out of their last 10 matches on their travels.
In addition, Lille are unbeaten in each of their last four meetings against Montpellier, three of which were admittedly on home turf at their Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
The one away match during these recent exchanges resulted in a 1-0 win for Lille back in December of 2018 and a similar scoreline could unfold here on Wednesday night.
