Union Berlin have made an impressive start to the 2020/21 campaign and look like they could not only finish in the top-half this season, but possibly challenge for the European places.
Saturday’s hosts will be looking for a response following their disappointing 3-1 defeat in the Berlin Derby against neighbours Hertha.
Union have won three, drawn two and lost one of their last six league games, but they face a much tougher test this weekend. Five of the host’s last six outings have ended with both teams scoring and Union have netted in all of their last six matches.
Over 2.5 goals have been produced in five of their last six matches as well, suggesting that the goals are likely to flow on Saturday.
These two clubs have only clashed three times before, one of which was a friendly back in 2009. Bayern Munich have won each of the three encounters and both teams have scored and over 2.5 goals have been produced in two of those clashes.
Bayern Munich’s lead at the top of the Bundesliga was cut to a single point following their 3-3 draw at home to RB Leipzig last time out. Leipzig remain 2pts behind Bayern, slipping to third in the table, but Leverkusen beat Schalke and move into second spot.
Both teams have scored in each of Bayern Munich’s last six matches in all competitions, so clean sheets have been a rarity for both sides lately.
Over 2.5 goals have been scored in four of Bayern’s last six outings, with the visitors netting exactly 3-goals in all four of those high-scoring matches. Bayern striker, Robert Lewandowski top scores in the Bundesliga this season with 12-goals and has netted 8-goals in his last 8-matches in league and cup. The Polish international has also scored in both league games against Union Berlin last season.
Robert Andrich is suspended for the home side this weekend, while Max Kruse, Joel Pohjanpalo and Anthony Ujah have all been ruled out due to injury.
Bayern Munich also have players out injured and won’t be able to call upon Jerome Boateng, Lucas Hernandez, Javier Martinez, Corentin Tolisso or Joshua Kimmich for Saturday’s clash.
Bayern have scored 12 more goals than their nearest rivals in the Bundesliga, which happens to be Union Berlin and Dortmund, and the visitors’ firepower should make the difference on Saturday.
This game looks set to produce goals at both ends of the pitch, but it is difficult to imagine anything other than a Bayern Munich victory.
