Everton are shock Premier League leaders and go into matchday 6 seeking a fifth win from six games. Carlo Ancelotti’s team are coming off of a 2-2 draw in the Merseyside Derby and now fancy their chances of gaining another win versus Southampton away.

The Saints head into matchday 6 on the back of a three-match unbeaten run. Ralph Hassenhuttl’s team collected seven points from nine possible in their last three games. Last weekend they claimed a come from behind draw versus Chelsea, 3-3, at Stamford Bridge.

Everton are unbeaten in nine of their last 12 games versus Southampton in all competitions. The Toffees posted a 5W-4D-3L record against Southampton during that 12-game span.

Last season, Everton went to the south coast and claimed a 2-1 win versus Southampton. They won the first half with a goal before both sides found the back of the net in the second period.

Their reverse fixture at Goodison Park ended 1-1 with both teams finding the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes. Can Everton keep up their great form away at St. Mary’s Stadium this weekend?

It is worth noting that Everton play on Sunday while title chasers Aston Villa and Liverpool play on Friday and Saturday respectively.

Ancelotti will be without Richarlison after his sending off against Liverpool last weekend. Making matters worse is the loss of James Rodriguez. He picked up a fitness issue against Liverpool and played through it. Rodriguez won’t be able to play this weekend and is now ruled out.

The good news is full-back Jonjoe Kenny is fit to play. Meanwhile, fellow full-back Seamus Coleman is ruled out through injury.

Hassenhuttl is without Theo Walcott for the game as the winger is unable to play against his parent club. Stuart Armstrong could return to the team after recovering from a positive COVID-19 test. Moussa Djenepo is out of action due to a thigh strain.

Everton won at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and at Selhurst Park. They should keep their winning streak on the road alive with victory at St. Mary’s Stadium. It will be a challenge without both Richarlison and James.

Champions rise to the occasion when their best players are out. Are Everton champion – or top-four – material? We will find out on Sunday against Southampton.

Expect both teams to score as Everton edge past Southampton. The Toffees should bounce back from last weekend’s Merseyside Derby draw with an away win.
