Two nations that finished in 3rd place in their respective Euro Championship qualifying groups, Slovakia and Republic of Ireland, will lock horns at the Štadión Tehelné pole in Bratislava for the right to meet either Bosnia-Herzegovina or Northern Ireland in the play-off final for next year’s Euro competition.

Slovakia have produced mixed results of late which contributed to their 3rd place finish in Group E of the Euro qualifiers but the hosts have actually managed to pick up just one win from their last six matches overall in all competitions.

Slovakia’s one success during this period was a 2-0 home win over Azerbaijan in the qualifiers but defeats against Croatia in the qualifiers and a Nations League defeat away at Czech Republic have set them back a bit.

It’s worth mentioning that Slovakia have also been involved in a number of draws lately as stalemates with Wales, Paraguay and Israel indicate, while form at home has been generally solid; Slovakia have lost just two of their last nine Euro qualifiers at home with five of these nine ending under 2.5 goals.

Republic of Ireland also finished in 3rd place in their Euro qualifying Group D behind group winners, Switzerland, and runners-up, Denmark, in what was a solid campaign for the Irishmen under former coach, Mick McCarthy, but it could have been even better had the Republic not endured a disappointing finish to the campaign.

Republic of Ireland failed to win any of their last four matches in the group which included three draws with Switzerland 1-1 at home, a 0-0 draw away at Georgia and a 1-1 draw at home with Denmark.

These results along with a 2-0 defeat away from home at Switzerland allowed both Switzerland and Denmark to not only make up ground but ultimately, overtake the Irish in Group D.

The visitors have improved on their travels though in recent times as they’ve suffered just one defeat out of their last five matches in Euro qualifiers which was the aforementioned loss against the Swiss, but interestingly, there have also been three draws within these five matches too.

Four of the previous five meetings between these two nations have ended up in draws and another stalemate could unfold on Thursday evening.
