Red Bull Salzburg to qualify for UCL group stage once more
    29/09/20 2052

Reigning Austrian Bundesliga champions Red Bull Salzburg made hard work of their Champions League playoff round first leg win against Maccabi Tel Aviv. Jesse Marsch’s team claimed a 2-1 win but had the chance to score more goals.

Now, the Red Bulls head home to Salzburg where they host the Israeli champions. They have one foot in the Champions League group stage once again and should finish the playoff round with a victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv.

The Israeli’s won’t make it easy on Red Bull Salzburg. Maccabi Tel Aviv took a 1-0 lead against the run of play in the first leg. Dan Biton’s ninth-minute goal put Maccabi Tel Aviv in the lead, which they took into the halftime break.

Red Bull Salzburg had chances but it wasn’t until the 49th minute that they levelled the scoreline. Dominik Szoboszlai’s penalty put the teams on level terms and Masaya Okugawa’s tidy finish just before the hour-mark put the Red Bulls in the lead.

Maccabi are in poor form heading into the midweek match. They are winless in three of their last four games with two of those fixtures ending in losses.

Manager Georgios Donis had a player shortage for the first leg against Red Bull Salzburg due to several players testing positive for COVID-19. Prior to the first leg, six players and seven members of staff tested positive. They could still be without players for the second leg in Austria.

Marsch doesn’t have the fitness issues that Donis does. Red Bull Salzburg have won all five matches played in all competitions this season. Even when going behind in games, such as the first leg versus Maccabi, Red Bull Salzburg have not wavered from attacking football.

Red Bull Salzburg have scored 22 goals in five matches for an average of 4.40 goals a game. They have only allowed four goals for an average of 0.80 per match.

The Red Bulls are one win away from assuring themselves a spot in the Champions League group stage. It will be the second straight season – and just the second time – that Red Bull Salzburg have made the tournament proper.

All the hard work that has gone into the club and player development is paying off. Expect Marsch’s team to play without restrictions on Wednesday night and to roll past Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Each Red Bull Salzburg game has finished with over 2.5 goals this term. Wednesday night’s game should be the sixth straight to end with more than 2.5 goals scored.
