The Estadio Wanda Metropolitano sees Sunday’s hosts, Atletico Madrid, make their bow in this season’s La Liga campaign as they play host to the surprise early leaders of the Spanish top flight, Granada.

This is Atletico Madrid’s first competitive match since their exit in the Champions League following their 2-1 defeat to German Bundesliga side, RB Leipzig, so the hosts will undoubtedly be keen to get off to a good start and bounce back from that disappointment.

Prior to that loss to Leipzig, Atletico Madrid had enjoyed an impressive sequence of form as the hosts were unbeaten in their previous 18 matches in all competitions which included notable victories over Liverpool (home and away) and also a 1-0 home win over Sunday’s visitors, Granada, back in early February.

Atletico Madrid assumed their usual place in the La Liga pecking order last term as they finished last season’s campaign in their accustomed 3rd place behind the top two clubs, Real Madrid and Barcelona, and Diego Simeone’s side were unbeaten on the domestic front in their final 11 matches on home turf.

As mentioned earlier, Granada are the surprise league leaders of La Liga heading into this weekend’s action having registered back-to-back wins against Athletic Bilbao and Deportivo Alaves, collecting the maximum six points on offer.

In between these domestic top flight wins, Granada recorded a convincing 4-0 win away from home at Albanian outfit, Teuta Durres, in the Europa League and they’re due to play Georgian side, Lokomotiva Tbilisi, in the 3rd qualifying round of the competition on Thursday evening.

It should be noted that both of Granada’s wins in La Liga though have been registered on home turf at their Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes where they won 10 of their 19 matches last season, while results away from home also improved with the visitors ending last term unbeaten in their final seven matches on their travels.

This improvement in fortunes on the road contributed to Granada’s 7th place finish at the end of last season but they have a wretched record away from home against Atletico Madrid.

Atletico Madrid are unbeaten in each of the previous 14 meetings against Granada and have won all seven previous encounters at home on the trot, so the hosts look set to continue their dominance on Sunday.
