The Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes provides the venue for the new La Liga season and the curtain-raiser between Granada and Athletic Bilbao who finished in 7th and 11th respectively at the end of last season’s La Liga campaign.
Granada produced a solid campaign last season in the Spanish top flight as Saturday evening’s hosts finished in 7th place and grabbed the last European spot in the Europa League qualifiers, where they’re due to travel to Albanian outfit, Teuta Durres, in next Thursday’s 2nd qualifying round.
Firstly, there’s the small matter of this season-opener against Athletic Bilbao though, and Granada will be keen to record a third win on the trot when the new season starts, having finished last term with back-to-back wins against Mallorca (2-1 away) and Saturday night’s opponents, Athletic Bilbao, with a resounding 4-0 win at home.
Granada ended last season’s La Liga campaign in solid fashion as they suffered just one defeat out of their final six matches of the season which was to Real Madrid, while goals at home were not always forthcoming with 9 of their 19 home matches resulting in under 2.5 goals.
Onto Athletic Bilbao, and the visitors will no doubt be keen to avoid a repeat of their heavy 4-0 defeat away at the hands of Granada again when they travel to the Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes for this season-opener in La Liga on Saturday night.
Overall, an inconsistent season last term resulted in Athletic Bilbao finishing mid-table in 11th place on the La Liga ladder and their campaign worsened towards the end of the season as they lost four of their final five matches.
Defeats to Real Madrid, Sevilla, Leganes and Granada saw Athletic Bilbao slump to a disappointing finish although three of these four aforementioned defeats were incurred on home turf at their San Mamés Barria.
Results away from home picked up towards the end of the campaign for Athletic Bilbao as they suffered just two defeats out of their final six matches of the season on the road with losses at Barcelona and Granada, but they also picked up wins at Real Valladolid, Valencia and Levante.

Goals were also a little thin on the ground as 11 of Athletic Bilbao’s 19 away matches resulted in under 2.5 goals and this opening match of this new season at Granada may also produce a low-scoring affair.
