A 6-1 thrashing of SPAL away from home last time out in the Italian top flight handed Sunday’s hosts, Roma, a fourth win in five matches and the home side will look to pile on the pressure against mid-table Fiorentina in this upcoming clash at their Stadio Olimpico.
Recent victories over Parma, Brescia, Hellas Verona and SPAL have helped maintain Roma’s push for automatic qualification for next season’s Europa League and although they’ve missed out on a top four finish and participation in the more lucrative Champions League, the hosts know they can’t afford to slip up here.
With the likes of 6th placed AC Milan and 7th placed Napoli hot on their heels, Roma will be looking to their form at home to get them across the line, and having won four of their last six matches at their Stadio Olimpico, the hosts look well placed for further success against Fiorentina.
Wins against Lecce, Sampdoria, Parma and Hellas Verona should give Roma the necessary momentum to add to their points tally on Sunday.
Mid-table Fiorentina currently occupy 11th place on the Serie A ladder but with a significant 16-point deficit on 6th placed AC Milan, the visitors are well away from any hopes of a European spot this term.
An unbeaten sequence of six matches in Serie A has been a case of too little too late for Fiorentina as they left themselves too much to do after the lockdown was lifted, and although they’ve recorded recent wins against Parma, Lecce and Torino, the latter two victories were against teams sitting in the lower reaches of the division.
Fiorentina’s results away from home have also been sporadic as the visitors have collected just four wins from their last 12 matches on their travels, and with apparently very little left to play for in these latter stages of this campaign, Fiorentina may be just going through the motions.
The visitors may also have the heavy 4-1 loss to Roma just prior to Christmas in the backs of their minds too as they prepare for this tough trip to face their hosts this Sunday at the Stadio Olimpico where they’ve managed to record just one win over Roma in their previous four visits.
To sum up, Roma have more at stake here and the hosts should ease to another home win.
