Tottenham Hotspur and RB Leipzig set for UCL thriller

Tottenham Hotspur host RB Leipzig on Wednesday night in north London in the Champions League last 16. The match pits two of the most exciting teams left in the competition and is rather unpredictable heading into the fixture.

Jose Mourinho’s team are unbeaten in seven straight games in all competitions with three consecutive matches finishing in wins. Tottenham Hotspur are up to fifth in the Premier League and knocking on the door of Champions League qualification.

Julian Nagelmann’s RB Leipzig are flying high in the Bundesliga. The Red Bulls are just one point off of first place Bayern Munich and fighting for the league title.

While Tottenham Hotspur are in good form unbeaten in seven matches, RB Leipzig are unbeaten in just two straight fixtures in the Bundesliga. RB Leipzig started the second half of the Bundesliga slowly following the winter break.

Nagelmann’s team were winners at the weekend versus Werder Bremen 3-0 as they won both halves. It followed on from a nil-nil draw with league leaders Bayern Munich. Spurs lost to Bayern Munich by a combined 10-3 scoreline in the Champions League group stage earlier this season.

Mourinho doesn’t have any new injury worries following Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-2 come from behind win versus Aston Villa at the weekend. Harry Kane and Moussa Sissoko are out long-term. Juan Foyth is also ruled out with an injury but Erik Lamela could be back in the team for RB Leipzig’s visit.

Nagelmann’s will be without midfielder/wing-back Tyler Adams. The American missed the team’s weekend win versus Werder Bremen. On loan Manchester City wing-back Angelino did not feature over the weekend but could return in time for the game.

The coach should pair the exciting combination of Timo Werner and Patrik Schick. The duo could have plenty of joy versus Tottenham Hotspur’s defence. Five of the last seven Spurs’ games in all competitions have ended with both teams scoring goals. Back to back games ended with over 2.5 goals.

RB Leipzig will play a 3-5-2 formation with three defenders at the back. Meanwhile, Mourinho will use a 4-2-3-1 formation. He could deploy forward Heung Min-son to lead the line after the South Korean’s two-goal game against Aston Villa.

Mourinho knows how to win in the Champions League and playing at home should help Tottenham Hotspur claim a victory versus RB Leipzig. These high-powered teams should both score with over 2.5 goals tallied. Spurs should claim the first leg win at home against the Germans.
