Villarreal have enjoyed something of a resurgence in recent weeks in La Liga. Back-to-back wins over Espanyol and Alaves have put the Yellow Submarine within touching distance of the Spanish top-flights top-six.
In fact, if Javi Calleja’s team win at Eibar on Thursday evening and results elsewhere go their way, Villarreal could be level on points with surprise leaders Granada.
The two recent victories in La Liga have not been one-offs, as the visitors have won five of their last seven matches heading to Eibar. Their only blips in that recent run have been defeats at Barcelona and Osasuna.
Picking up results on their travels has been majorly difficult for the Yellow Submarine, who have won just two of the last seven away games in La Liga. Poor defensive showings have not helped the visitors on their travels of late either, as they have conceded at least two goals in five of their last seven outings in the Spanish top-flight.
They can at least point to the fact that they have scored in their last 12 away games in La Liga as a minor positive.
Eibar have punched above their financial weight in the Spanish top-flight in recent seasons. However, the minnows have made a poor start to the current campaign.
Jose Mendilibar’s team have taken just nine points from their opening ten matches and currently sit 16th in the table. There is a big chance that Eibar could be in the relegation zone by the end of the current round of fixtures.
The home side has failed to win in three La Liga games, suffering defeats against Barcelona and Real Sociedad in their last two league outings. Those games have seen Eibar fail to score and concede at least twice in each encounter.
