On Thursday evening, Romanian team Cluj host Serie A outfit Lazio at the Stadionul Dr. Constantin Radulescu in Group E of the Europa League.
Cluj have become regulars in European competitions in recent seasons after two straight domestic league titles. This season they exited the Champions League at the play-off stage, suffering a 2-0 aggregate defeat against Slavia Prague. The defeat saw the Dan Petrescu’s side drop into the Europa League group stages.
The Europa League really has not been kind to the Romanian team in recent years, as they have suffered five defeats in seven outings, recording just one victory in the process. Cluj have also won just once in eight group stage matches in Europe’s secondary competition. A tie against Italian side Lazio is unlikely to improve that poor record.
Cluj have struggled for home wins in European competition, winning just three of their last ten matches on home soil in the Champions League and Europa League.
The Romanian team have never faced Lazio in competitive action. However, they did record a famous 2-1 victory over Lazio’s city rivals Roma on their Champions League group stage debut back in 2008.
Lazio made it to the last 32 of the Europa League last season when the visitors suffered a 3-0 aggregate loss to Spanish side Sevilla. The Italian side are making a joint-record eighth appearance in the group stage of the Europa League this season
The home side has had mixed fortunes in Romania, winning once, drawing once and losing once against various opponents. The club from the Italian capital lost 1-0 at Steaua Bucharest on their last visit to the country in season 2017/18.
The visitors have made it out of the group stages in their last six attempts in the Europa League, winning their group on three occasions.
