Manchester City won a second straight Premier League title last season. The Citizens just pipped Liverpool to the crown by one point. It is an impressive feat considering Liverpool relentless form last season.
However, it was an even more impressive feat considering Pep Guardiola’s side spent most the season without key midfielder Kevin de Bruyne. The Belgian midfielder endured a frustrating campaign due to injury.
This season, though, De Bruyne has returned to fitness and form, arguably looking better than ever. On Monday night, the midfielder played a key role in the Red Devils 4-0 win in Scotland. He got on the scoresheet and also had a hand in the other three goals.
The display against Steve Clarke’s men was unsurprising considering the start to the season he has enjoyed with the Citizens. De Bruyne has scored once and produced five assists.
It is the midfielder’s ability to create chances for his teammates with vision and his passing ability that put him above most players in his position in the Premier League. It would also be fair to say that he is one of the best midfielders in the world game.
City are in another battle with Liverpool once again for the English top-flight title. The Citizens are also one of the favourites to win the Champions League this season. However, if Guardiola’s team are to compete on all fronts, they will need their best players on top form. De Bruyne is certainly one of those.
When De Bruyne is in form, City are an even more formidable force than they are without the Belgian star. If the Citizens are to finally win their holy grail of the Champions League, then it is vital that De Bruyne stays injury-free, as quite simply he is world-class.
