Big Match of the Weekend at Anfield

Big Match of the Weekend at Anfield
    23/08/19 5074

There is a full compliment of Premier League fixtures this weekend starting on Friday night but there is no doubt where the biggest game of the weekend takes place. Anfield is the setting on Saturday evening as Liverpool host Arsenal in what could be a cracking match.

Liverpool are hoping to win the Premier League title this season whereas Arsenal are hoping to break into the top four and even push the leaders close.

The Reds come into this game having defeated Southampton 2-1 away from home last weekend. It was a tough afternoon for Liverpool and they struggled to get control of the game in the first half-half but a great goal from Sadio Mane eased their nerves. A second goal from Roberto Firmino was enough for Liverpool to win the game but they were far from comfortable throughout.

However, they still won the match and trends show Liverpool have won each of their last eleven Premier League matches. In fact, they have lost just one of their last forty league games, which is an impressive record.  Home form shows twenty-four games without defeat in all competitions and eight straight victories in the Premier League.

Liverpool have scored 2 or more goals in twelve of their last thirteen home Premier League games and are difficult to stop in the attacking third at Anfield. Nonetheless, they are yet to keep a clean sheet this season.

Arsenal travel north having defeated Burnley 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium last weekend. Arsenal looked as though they were going to take control of the match when Alexandre Lacazette scored but Burnley did well and got an equaliser before half-time. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted the winner in the second half but Arsenal were not as dominant as they would have wished.

However, the win means Arsenal join Liverpool with 6 points from their two games this season. On the opening weekend they beat Newcastle United 1-0 away, which was a good result at venue which can be difficult to win.

Arsenal ended last season with a 3-1 win at Burnley and trends show the Gunners have seen both teams score in fifteen of their last twenty away Premier League matches. They will be hoping their defence can match the quality of their attack at Anfield.

Team news and Liverpool are still without first choice goalkeeper Alisson, which means Adrian will continue in goal. Nathaniel Clyne is out until January while Naby Keita is struggling with a muscle injury.

Arsenal were without Granit Xhaka last weekend and it remains unclear if the central midfielder will play any part in this match. Konstantinos Mavropanos and Hector Bellerin are not expected back until October.

This should be a very good game to watch, with neither defence convincing this season. However, Liverpool are a tough proposition at Anfield and even if Arsenal find the back of the net, expect Liverpool to outscore them as they win with both teams scoring.
