Uganda face hosts Egypt in Cairo on Sunday to wrap up Group A.

Egypt have already qualified for the round of sixteen with two wins from their opening two matches.

Uganda are second in Group A with four points and a draw against Egypt would be enough to see them reach the knockout stage.

Egypt followed up a 1-0 win over Zimbabwe on the opening night of the tournament by beating DR Congo in their last match.

Aston Villa right-back Ahmed Elmohamady opened the scoring against DR Congo after 25 minutes before Mohamed Salah secured the victory with a brilliant strike just before half-time.

Despite DR Congo’s 19 shots throughout the match, Egypt held on to book their place in the last sixteen of the competition.

Uganda also beat DR Congo 2-0 but could only manage a draw with Zimbabwe in their next match.

Emmanuel Okwi gave his side the lead in the 12th minute; pouncing on a mistake from the Zimbabwe goalkeeper to slot the ball into an empty net.

Zimbabwe rallied and brought the scores level just before the break however, after a goalless second half, the match ended 1-1.

This draw puts Uganda in a fantastic position to qualify for the next round. Even if they were to lose to Egypt, they could still finish second in the group if Zimbabwe fail to beat DR Congo in the other Group A match.

If Zimbabwe beat DR Congo and Uganda lose to Egypt, they are likely to still qualify as one of the best third placed teams.

Egypt have won the Africa Cup of Nations a record seven times and are among the favorites to claim the title again this year.

On the other hand, this is only the seventh AFCON that Uganda have competed at and they are yet to lift the trophy.

Uganda have only managed to beat Egypt on two occasions whilst The Pharaohs have claimed fifteen victories in reply.

With that being said, Uganda did manage a 1-0 win over Egypt in 2017. They claimed this rare victory in a World Cup qualifying match and will be hoping they can get a similar result this time around.

Egypt’s squad is far stronger than Uganda’s and the hosts should make it three wins from three matches on Sunday.

Forebet predicts an Egypt win, with over 2.5 goals likely to be scored.
