Crucial Game for Kenya and Tanzania

Crucial Game for Kenya and Tanzania

Group C of the 2019 African Cup of Nations features Kenya, Tanzania, Senegal and Algeria. Before a ball was kicked, both Senegal and Algeria were the favourites to progress and they currently top the group.

However, with the top four third place teams also qualifying for the knockout stages, Kenya and Tanzania know a win in their meeting could be crucial. The match will be played on the 27th June at the 30 June Stadium, Cairo.

Kenya come into the game having suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Algeria in their opening match. They were 2-0 down at half-time but produced a much stronger display in the second half to keep Algeria at bay.  If they can repeat their second half showing from the off in this game, Kenya have a chance of winning.

The Harambee Stars came through a qualifying group which featured Ghana and they defeated them 1-0 at home, which was a great result.  However, trends show Kenya have won only one of their last four matches which was 1-0 against Madagascar in a friendly prior to this tournament. They also lost 1-0 to Ghana away from home in qualifying and were held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in their final warm-up match.

Kenya have seen under 2.5 goals in eight of their last nine games.

Tanzania are playing in their second African Cup of Nations, making them very inexperienced at this level of the game. They came through a qualifying group which included Uganda, Lesotho and Cape Verde and enjoyed a very good 3-0 win at home over Uganda during qualifying.

However, they struggled in their opening match of the 2019 African Cup of Nations against one of the favourites for the competition, Senegal. The 2-0 final score could have been more and Tanzania struggled in midfield, where they were dominated for much of the 90 minutes.

Trends show The Taifa Stars have won only one of their last five games in all competitions. That came against Uganda in their final qualifying match.  However, they have lost to Lesotho, Egypt and Senegal plus have been held by Zimbabwe.

Tanzania have failed to find the back of the net in three of their last five games.

Team news and Kenya are unlikely to make many changes from the team which started the previous game. Francis Kahata could come in having been brought on at half-time against Algeria.

Tanzania do not have a great deal they can change to strengthen their starting XI. Feisal Salum and Saimon Msuva are the two players most likely to come into the team.

Kenya will feel they can win this match. They have the better head-to-head record recently but goals have not been flowing when these two teams meet.  Kenya to win and under 2.5 goals is a possibility.
