Goals in short supply as Millwall take on Bristol City at The Den

Goals in short supply as Millwall take on Bristol City at The Den

Tuesday night brings us just the one game from the Championship and a clash between Millwall and Bristol City whose immediate futures have recently been decided for the time being.

Millwall’s point against Stoke City in Saturday’s dour 0-0 draw at The Den proved to be enough for The Lions to escape the drop as third from bottom club, Rotherham United, couldn’t better Millwall’s result with The Millers losing 2-1 away at West Brom.

Millwall are safe for another season then in the Championship as they have two games remaining of the season and hold a decisive four point lead over Rotherham United who have just one match to go of their Championship campaign, and will bid farewell to the second tier with League One football next season.

Back to Millwall though, and Neil Harris’s side continued to pick up points in the run-in, losing just once in their last six matches, but four draws and a 2-0 win at home against West Brom saw the London club steer themselves to safety.

The hosts are unbeaten in their last four matches, but it hasn’t been pretty - goals have been in short supply overall at home this season, with 12 of their 22 home matches resulting in under 2.5 goals.

Bristol City’s play-off ambitions went out the window after losing three of their last four matches in the Championship as Lee Johnson’s side imploded when the going got tougher.

Defeats to Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday and the decisive 2-0 loss at home to play-off rivals Derby County on Saturday put an end to Bristol City’s top six ambitions, and the west country outfit will be left wondering what could have been as they make their way to the nation’s capital for Monday night’s clash with Millwall.

Bristol City have lost their last two away matches on the trot at Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday, and although The Robins registered the highest number of away wins of all the teams situated outside the top six (10), their inconsistencies on the road let them down.

The visitors have also been involved in a number of low scoring games too on their travels as 13 of their 21 away matches have resulted in under 2.5 goals.

Both teams have nothing left to play for, but given their respective poor showings on the weekend with neither side scoring, this encounter looks to be heading for a low scoring affair.
