Leeds United and Wigan Athletic to produce goals at Elland Road

Leeds United took full advantage of being at Elland Road on the weekend when they registered a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday which meant that Marcelo Bielsa’s side moved three points clear of Sheffield United as we head into the Easter period with Leeds sitting in 2nd place on the Championship ladder.

Leeds know that their automatic promotion fate is now in their own hands, and having registered six wins from their last eight matches in the Championship, the Yorkshire club are almost within touching distance of the finishing line as they prepare for the visit of struggling Wigan Athletic to Elland Road on Good Friday.

The hosts have also racked up six wins from their last eight matches at Elland Road too and they’re level with league leaders, Norwich City, in terms of home wins (14) so far in this campaign.

Goals have also featured at Elland Road this season and significantly, leading goalscorer Roofe (14 goals) came off the bench on Saturday as he returns to fitness and with the likes of goalscoring midfielders Hernandez (12 goals) and Klich (8 goals) along with forwards Bamford (8 goals) and Alioski (7 goals), the hosts should notch again in this clash.

Wigan Athletic did their hopes of Championship survival no harm at all in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at home with Championship league leaders, Norwich City as Paul Cook’s men continued to keep their heads above water with a two point cushion above the bottom three.

However, another mammoth task awaits The Latics on Good Friday as they make their way to Elland Road, looking for just their second league win in 13 matches and cause a major upset in this encounter.

Although Wigan have stopped the rot to a certain extent, losing just once in their last five matches overall in the Championship, which was a 2-1 loss away at Hull City, they’ll do well to get anything out of a strong Leeds outfit who are closing in on automatic promotion.

Nevertheless, Paul Cook’s side know nothing other than attacking football and this could be an open and entertaining affair, especially as Wigan will be desperate to end their atrocious form away from home which has seen The Latics endure a 19-match sequence without a win on the road.

12 of Wigan’s 21 away matches have resulted in over 2.5 goals, and they’re expected to press forward here in order to keep the relegation zone at arms length.

Leeds will push for all three points to keep Sheffield United at bay while Wigan are fighting for their lives - therefore, more goals look to be on the cards at Elland Road.
