European Hopes Fading for Marseille

    European Hopes Fading for Marseille

There is one mid-week French Ligue 1 fixture to look forward to as Marseille welcome Bordeaux to the Orange Velodrome on Tuesday night.

This is a game in hand for both teams and will take them up to the same number of matches played as the other teams in Ligue One.  Marseille begin the game in 10th place and if they are to have any hope of playing in Europe next season, they must win this match.

The same applies to Bordeaux, who find themselves 3 points behind the hosts in 12th place.

Marseille suffered another defeat on the weekend as they went down 2-1 at Reims.  The teams went into the match on the same number of points but Marseille came out second best and that shows where they are at the moment.

Trends show Marseille have won just one of their last twelve games in all competitions. Their last win came at Caen in Ligue 1 and then you must go back to November to find their other most recent victory.

Interestingly, only once in their last nine Ligue 1 games have Marseille managed to score over a single goal in a match but only once during that period of games have they failed to find the back of the net.

Home form in Ligue 1 shows Marseille have won just one of their last five, losing last time out to Lille and being held by Monaco and Reims in their previous two matches.

Bordeaux did not play on the weekend and you must go back to the 30th January to find their last match was against Strasbourg in the Coupe de la Ligue.  Bordeaux lost the game 3-2 away and also went down 1-0 at Strasbourg in their last Ligue One game which was on the 26th January.

Trends show Girondins Bordeaux have not been easy to beat in Ligue 1 recently and they have lost only two of their last ten Ligue 1 matches. However, during that time there has only been three victories with the other five games all ending in draws.

Away form in the league shows Bordeaux have won one of their last seven matches and have failed to score a goal in three of the last four on the road.

Looking ahead to the team news and Marseille are still without the injured duo of Dimitri Payet and Adil Rami who are expected to return later this month.  Mario Balotelli is expected to continue in attack despite failing to score on the weekend.

Bordeaux have Aurelien Tchouameni back in training but there are still doubts over Nicolas De Preville and Zaydou Youssouf is out until March with a knee injury.

These teams are close in the league and it is difficult to separate them in this game thanks to their indifferent form.  It would not be a surprise to see a draw and under 2.5 goals.
