Newcastle and Wolves to extend their unbeaten runs

Newcastle and Wolves to extend their unbeaten runs

Newcastle host Wolverhampton Wanderers in Sunday’s only Premier League match. Both clubs are aiming to extend their unbeaten runs after successful results in midweek.

Wolverhampton shocked Chelsea with a 2-1 come from behind win. Wolves are now just four points from the top six. Newcastle drew in midweek away at Everton as their form continues to improve under Rafael Benitez. The Magpies are unbeaten in five of their last six matches and they are now four points above the relegation zone. Both clubs have plenty of incentives to go for all three points on Sunday at St. James’ Park.

The clubs last met in 2017 when both were in the Championship. Newcastle United have won four of their last six games against Wolves dating back to 2011 in all competitions. The Magpies have edged their rivals in goals, 11-6, during that time. Three of the six meetings have seen over 2.5 goals; however, the clubs’ last three games have ended with fewer than 2.5 goals scored.

Wolves’ win against Chelsea was their first win in seven games. The team had gone winless in six straight matches with five of those ending in loss. Wolves have collected eight points from 21 possible away from Molineux Stadium this season. Nuno Espirito Santo has seen his side post a –2-goal difference away from home with seven goals conceded. Santo will have Ruben Neves back from suspension for the fixture. The manager used his expert knowledge against Chelsea by fielding Morgan Gibbs-White as a false No. 9. He and Benitez will try to outdo the other when the teams meet.

Home hasn’t been where the heart is for Newcastle. The Magpies have won just six points from 18 possible at St. James’ Park. It is the fifth lowest tally in the Premier League. Newcastle have allowed 13 goals for a –7-goal difference.

Newcastle player Paul Dummett has been suffering with a hamstring injury and continues to be assessed by the team’s doctors. The good news is Benitez will have Matt Ritchie make from suspension for Wolves’ visit. Wolverhampton full-back Jonny Castro Otto is still suffering from an injury. Wolves will hope the full-back is fit and ready to play again soon, but Sunday playing Sunday may not be possible.

Both teams have played good football at times this season. Now, they are working on building consistency. Sunday’s game at St. James Park will end in a draw with fewer than 2.5 goals scored in the match. Both clubs will continue their unbeaten runs as they move away from the relegation zone.
