The 2018/19 Champions League playoffs conclude on Wednesday night with the teams desperate to win and secure a place in the lucrative group stages of the competition.

There are some evenly balanced ties to look forward to with perhaps the most tantalisingly poised between PAOK and Benfica.  The first leg ended 1-1 at the Stadium of Light last week and that gives PAOK a slight advantage going into the second leg.

Will PAOK see out the tie with a win at the Stadio Toumbas or will Benfica score the away goal they need to make things interesting?

PAOK have made a good start to the season.  They began their domestic league campaign this weekend with a 1-0 home win against Asteras Tripolis.  However, the bulk of their early season games have come in the Champions league.

Trends show PAOK have already played fives games in the Champions League qualifying rounds and are yet to be defeated.  They started in the second round against Basel and won 2-1 at home before recording an excellent 3-0 victory in Switzerland.

Into the third qualifying round and PAOK defeated Spartak Moscow 3-2 at home before seeing out the tie with a battling 0-0 draw in the Russian capital.  PAOK have won both their home games in Champions League qualifying and will be feeling very good about their chances of making it four wins in a row this season.

Benfica played their third match of the new Portuguese season on the weekend and were held to a 1-1 draw at home by city rivals Sporting. Trends show with that draw Benfica are undefeated in their six games this season, three of which have come in the Portuguese league and three in Champions league qualifying.

Benfica entered the Champions League at the third qualifying round this season and played Fenerbahce across two legs.  Having defeated the Turkish club 1-0 in Lisbon, Benfica scored an away goal in the second leg to draw 1-1 and progress 2-1 on aggregate.

Scoring in Istanbul will give Benfica some confidence they can get a goal in Greece but trends show they have recorded just one result in their previous six away Champions League which could be good enough to see them through without the need for extra-time.  That result was a 3-3 draw in Besiktas last season.

Benfica have kept just one clean sheet in their last fourteen away Champions league games, which suggests they will need to score at least once to have a chance of progressing.

Looking ahead to the team news and PAOK will continue to be without Dorian Leveque who has been out for some time.  The Greeks are unlikely to make many changes from the team which has been doing well this season.

Benfica are still missing striker Jonas who has a back injury.  They will also be without the injured duo of  Filip Krovinovic and Sebastien Corchia.

This should be a thrilling Champions League playoff.  PAOK will be feeling good following the first leg but Benfica have it in them to score any away goal, as they showed in the previous round.  This match could end level with the potential of extra-time.
