Marseille in Hunt for Champions League Place

Marseille in Hunt for Champions League Place

There are just two rounds of matches remaining in the French Ligue 1 this season and on Friday night, Guingamp and Marseille play their penultimate game of the season at the Stade du Roudourou.

The hosts remain hopeful of finishing in the top half this season and a win in this match would see them move up one place, to 10th in Ligue 1.  If other results go their way, Guingamp could finish as high as 7th this season.

Marseille have their sights firmly set on the top three but start the weekend sitting in 4th place, 1 point adrift of 3rd place Monaco and 2 points behind 2nd place Lyon.  A win would move Marseille into 2nd place and put pressure on the other two teams.

Guingamp come into this match having lost 3-1 at Dijon last weekend. This was a disappointing result against a team below them in the table and having held Paris Saint-Germain to a 2-2 draw away from home the week before, Guingamp were expecting more from that game.

Guingamp have been an entertaining team to watch in recent weeks and have seen over 2.5 goals scored in nine of their last ten Ligue 1 matches.  They have scored 2 or more goals in each of their last five home league games and have enjoyed some good recent success on home soil.

There have been wins over Bordeaux, Troyes and Monaco, with the latter a good 3-1 victory.

Marseille travel to the Stade du Roudourou on the back of a 2-1 home win against Nice last weekend. Prior to that match, Marseille snatched a late goal at Salzburg to book their place in the Europa League, which could provide another passage to the Champions League.

Marseille are in good form and domestically trends show they have lost just one of their last nine matches.  The goals have been flying in during their away games and Marseille have seen over 2.5 goals in five of their last six away Ligue 1 games and have scored 2 or more goals in six of their last eight.

Marseille are unbeaten in their last four away Ligue 1 games, winning three of them.  The wins have come at Toulouse, Dijon and Troyes and Marseille have scored 2 or more goals in each of those three matches.

Looking ahead to the team news and Guingamp could be without the injured trio of Nathael Julan, Yannis Salibur and Matteo Ahlinvi.  Jimmy Briand is the top goal scorer for Guingamp and should be fit to start the game.

Marseille will be without Greek international striker Konstantinos Mitroglou, who is injured.  They also have doubts over the fitness of defender Hiroki Sakai.

This should be a very exciting game and a great way to kick-off the action in France this weekend.  Given the goal scoring record of both teams, we should see over 2.5 goals in this match and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the points shared.
