RB Leipzig’s Champions League Hopes Hanging by A Thread

RB Leipzig’s Champions League Hopes Hanging by A Thread

The 2017/18 Bundesliga season is fast coming to a close and RB Leipzig and Wolfsburg meet on Saturday in a match which has huge ramifications for the top and bottom of the table.

RB Leipzig were a revelation last season and qualified for the Champions League.  Having played with Europe’s elite this season, RB Leipzig seemed set to do the same next season but currently find themselves outside the top four, with plenty of work to do.

Wolfsburg also have a serious matter on their hands but their issues come at the foot of the Bundesliga.  As things stand, Wolfsburg will face a relegation playoff but a win in this game could be good enough to see them move up the table.

RB Leipzig come into this match in terrible form and trends show they have won just one of their last six games in all competitions. That win came in the Europa League back at the beginning of April and RB Leipzig have failed to win any of their five matches since.

There have been defeats to Bayer Leverkusen, Hoffenheim and Mainz in the Bundesliga, the first two of which were at home.  RB Leipzig lost heavily 5-2 at Marseille in the Europa League and the only match which didn’t end in defeat in their last five games was the 1-1 draw at Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga.

RB Leipzig have been exciting to watch at home this season and both teams have scored in nineteen of their last twenty-four home games in all competitions.  Conceding goals has been a problem of late and trends show RB Leipzig have lost by 3 or more goals in four of their last five matches in all competitions.

Wolfsburg have really been struggling this season and have managed only one win from their last thirteen matches in all competitions. That win was a 2-0 victory at Freiburg a few weeks ago and since them, Wolfsburg have lost to Borussia Monchengladbach and Hamburg, the latter of which was a disappointing home defeat to a team below them in the table.

Away form has been poor and Wolfsburg have won two of their last seventeen away matches in all competitions.  Scoring goals has been a problem and Wolfsburg have scored 2 goals in their last four away Bundesliga games, both of which came in the same match.

Team news and RB Leipzig will be without defender Marcel Halstenberg and midfielder Marcel Sabitzer who are both injured.  Konrad Laimer could make a return to the team but Emil Forsberg, Naby Keita and Willi Orban are suspended.

Wolfsburg have fitness doubts over several players including Ignacio Camacho, Admir Mehmedi, Jeffrey Bruma, Marcel Tisserand and Yannick Gerhardt.

RB Leipzig have been in decline recently but come up against a Wolfsburg team who have also been struggling.  Wolfsburg may get a goal in this game but RB Leipzig should come out on top and claim maximum points.
