Both Chelsea and Liverpool will have a keen eye at goings on in the Hawthorns some 24 hours before. If Tottenham win and in turn relegate West Brom then it will turn the screw on each of the two clubs in action on Sunday albeit for slightly differing reasons.

For Chelsea it means the gap between them and Mauricio Pochettino’s men will be extended to eight points and should they fail to win at Stamford Bridge then their hopes of a Champions League place next season will finally be extinguished.

However, a win for Tottenham will also turn up the pressure on Liverpool in the race for the third place, a position that will do Spurs a huge favour should we see the scenario where Liverpool and Arsenal both win European silverware and finish outside the top four.

Chelsea come into this game having something of a resurgence as of late, winning their last three Premier League matches while also booking a place in the F.A. Cup Final. While Liverpool have stuttered domestically as of late with draws against struggling duo West Brom and Stoke.

Should Liverpool go on to win the Champions League then the ends will no doubt justify the means, but this is perhaps not the end to the domestic campaign that Jurgen Klopp will have wanted as they stutter towards the finishing line.

The best way to bounce back will be to beat Chelsea on their own turf and put a serious dent in their Champions League aspirations. However, Liverpool are not over the line yet in terms of the race for the top four.

For all their impressive European exploits, they cannot afford to think that it is job done. They can still suffer the nightmare scenario of finishing 5th in the table and not being successful in the Champions League.

A combination of factors that would mean that Liverpool must make do with a stint in the Europa League next season, something that is almost unfair after such a string of incredible performances in Europe’s top club competition.

But as they and everyone else know by now, football is not a game based on fairness and in scenarios such as this you make your own luck. The only way that Liverpool can make sure of a top four finish is a win at Stamford Bridge.

There will also be the extra impetus for Mohamed Salah as he looks to not only secure this season’s Premier League Golden Boot, but he will also be looking to move a step closer to Ian Rush’s record of goals scored in a single season.

Whilst also not forgetting the fact that he had a stint at Chelsea, looking at his performances as of late you do have to wonder just how much the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge regret selling him to Italian outfit Roma.

Still life goes on in Football and Chelsea will be up for this one especially with the stakes being so high, it may well be a game where the two sides cancel each other at it ends in a draw. If they do, then the real winners will be Tottenham without even having to kick a ball.
