Munich in Control Ahead of Second Leg

Munich in Control Ahead of Second Leg

The second set of UEFA Champions League quarter-finals take place on Wednesday night and the closest remaining tie is Bayern Munich vs Sevilla.

Bayern Munich are regulars at this stage of the Champions League and have won the tournament five times, the last being in 2012/13. Having already wrapped up the Bundesliga title again this season, the German champions can focus on this competition.

Sevilla have enjoyed great success in the Europa League, winning the trophy three times in a row between 2014 and 2016.  However, this is their first appearance in the quarter-final of the Champions League and they are up against it having lost the first leg 2-1 at home.

Bayern Munch will be looking forward to playing at the Allianz Arena in-front of their own fans for the first time since clinching the Bundesliga title thanks to a 4-1 win at Augsburg on the weekend.  It was their third win in a row and makes up for their 2-1 loss at RB Leipzig in their previous away match in the Bundesliga.

Trends show Bayern Munich are in great form in the Champions League and they have won each of their last seven games in the competition, including a good 3-1 home win over Paris Saint-Germain in the group stages.

At home, Bayern Munich have been hugely impressive this season and have yet to taste defeat.  They have won nineteen and drawn two of their twenty-one home matches and scored 28 goals in seven games since the winter break in Germany, at an average of 4 goals per game, which includes a 0-0 with Hertha Berlin.

Sevilla are breaking new ground in the Champions League this season but thoughts of finishing in the top four of La Liga have evaporated this season following the heavy 4-1 defeat at Celta Vigo on the weekend.

That defeat means it is now four matches without a win for Sevilla and you must go back to their sensational 2-1 win at Old Trafford against Manchester United in the Champions League to find the last time they won a match.

Since then, Sevilla have lost to Leganes, Celta Vigo and Bayern Munich plus drawn at home with Barcelona.

However, trends show Sevilla are unbeaten in five of their last six Champions League games but only two of those have ended in a win, with three draws and one defeat.

Looking ahead to the team news and Bayern Munich will be without goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and winger Kingsley Coman who are injured.  David Alaba and Arturo Vidal are doubtful but Robert Lewandowski was rested on the weekend and will return to the team for this game.

Sevilla travel without Miguel Layun plus Simon Kjaer, Gabriel Mercado and Sebastien Corchia are all struggling for fitness.  Ever Banega is available again following suspension and will slot straight back into the midfield.

Sevilla have proved they can win away from home in big games having defeated Manchester United but this is going to be one step too far against the German champions, who should win the match and progress to the semi-final of the Champions League.
