Greece have endured a difficult World Cup qualifying campaign of late but could seal a play-off spot when they host Gibraltar on Tuesday night.
Things have not quite gone to plan for the home side of late, as four draws in their last six qualifiers have hampered their attempts at sealing a place at next year’s World Cup.
However, despite their slip-up’s the home side are still second in the group and a win against whipping boys Gibraltar would see them confirm a play-off spot ahead off Bosnia-Herzegovina, who are currently trailing the Greeks by two points in the group.
Despite that recent run of draws in the group, Greece have a relatively strong record in qualifying, having suffered just one defeat in their last 16 qualifiers. The home side have also suffered just one home defeat in their last 14 World Cup qualifiers, so are difficult to beat on their own patch.
Gibraltar are in their maiden World Cup qualifying campaign after being granted full membership of UEFA back in 2013. It is fair to say that the campaign has not gone well for the new boys, as they have lost all nine of their qualifying games.
In fact, Gibraltar have conceded two or more goals in all nine qualifiers so far, while also conceding three or more in eight of their nine qualifiers. Understandably, the visitor’s away record in qualifying is poor too, as they have conceded a combined total of 21 goals in their four away qualifiers.
At the other end of the pitch, Jeff Wood’s side have scored just three times during the qualification campaign. The visitors will once again be looking to keep the score respective in this difficult clash.
