IFK Varnamo are struggling to find consistent winning form. They are just five points off the bottom three.
Malmo are coming off a 5-0 win over Degerfors last time out. The victory ended a two-match winless streak for the Sky Blues.
Malmo experienced one of their worst seasons in recent memory a year ago. There was chaos at the club with managers coming and going.
The Sky Blues finished seventh in the table, as BK Hacken won the Allsvenskan title. The club worked hard in the offseason to get its house in order and challenge for the title once more.
Malmo hired Henrik Rydstrom in the offseason to return the club to the summit of the table. Thus far, Rydstrom has done the job. Malmo picked up 13 points from the last six games, scoring 18 goals and conceding six.
The Sky Blues have the joint-best defence in the league, with just nine goals allowed.
IFK Varnamo picked up just six points from the last six matches in the league. They were outscored 7-5 across those six matches. Four of the last six fixtures saw IFK Varnamo fail to score.
Manager Kim Hellberg should be concerned with the team’s lack of goalscoring, especially with Malmo having the Allsvenskan’s joint-best defence. Malmo kept three clean sheets in their last six league matches.
Rydstrom appears to have a fully fit squad for the fixture. Striker Isaac Kiese Thelin leads the team with eight goals. He is second in the league’s goalscoring charts.
Thelin did not play against Degerfors last time out, so could be limited in minutes this weekend due to a fitness issue.
In Thelin’s absence, winger Sebastian Nanasi scored twice. He has six goals and two assists for Malmo this season.
IFK Varnamo manager Hellberg needs goals from his frontmen. Centre-forward Gustav Engvall leads IFK Varnamo in goals, but he has scored just three times.
Engvall also leads the team in assists with two. The forward has accounted for over 50% of IFK Varnamo’s goals.
Malmo are unlikely to run away with a big win like they did against Degerfors. The Sky Blues should still win, posting a narrow 1-0 victory.
