Newcastle United and Southampton are just 180 minutes away from a trip to Wembley for the Carabao Cup final. On Tuesday night, the Premier League rivals will meet in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal at St Mary’s Stadium.

The Saints came through the quarterfinals of the competition with a 2-0 win over Manchester City in an unexpected result. Newcastle defeated Leicester City at St James’ Park 2-0 to reach the final four.

These teams have met once before this season, with Newcastle United winning 4-1 at St Mary’s. Newcastle took a first-half lead courtesy of Miguel Almiron’s 35th-minute goal. Chris Wood and Joe Willock scored in the second half to make the score 3-0.

The Saints pulled a goal back through Romain Perraud in the 89th minute. But Bruno Guimaraes added a fourth for the Magpies to restore their three-goal lead.

Ralph Hasenhuttl was in charge of Southampton at the time of the Newcastle defeat in the league. Nathan Jones wasn’t appointed manager until later in the month.

Southampton are coming off a 1-0 league loss to Aston Villa at home. The defeat ended a three-game winning streak. Newcastle drew nil-nil at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace at the weekend to extend their run of good form.

Jones may have forward Theo Walcott available following a leg injury. Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy could be fit as well. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazuna was excellent against Manchester City in the quarterfinals and should start the semifinal first leg.

Centre-back Armel Bella-Kotchap could be fit for the game after a knee injury. Juan Larios and Valentino Livramento are ruled out of the fixture due to injuries.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has three players in the treatment room ahead of the semifinal first leg. Midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is out of action with a calf problem. Full-back Matt Targett will miss the game with a foot injury, and Emil Krath will miss the game following a knee problem.

The Magpies are undefeated in 10 consecutive fixtures versus Southampton in all competitions. They won seven of those 10 games and are on a two-game winning streak versus Southampton. Both wins were from games played at St Mary’s.

Newcastle United should post a third straight win against Southampton at St Mary’s. The game should end 3-1, with Newcastle leaving the south coast with the victory in the first leg. The last four games between these teams finished BTTS.
