Nothing to Separate the Top Six Hopefuls São Paulo and Fluminense in Serie A

Two sides battling it out for a spot in the top five will meet here as Sao Paulo welcomes Fluminense to the Cícero Pompeu de Toledo Stadium off the back of two stunning results in the Copa do Brasil for either team.

There is not much separating both clubs heading into this one in the points tally and the form table, as well as in the domestic cup after two great performances in the Copa do Brasil.

Both teams played out recent two-legged affairs, and Fluminense strolled past Cruzeiro 5-1 across the two legs after winning 2-1 on home soil before they smashed them 3-0 away from home back on Wednesday thanks to goals from Jhon Arias, German Cano, and Nathan Allan de Souza.

Sao Paulo had the toughest task of them all as they met with league leaders Palmeiras in the competition, and a first leg 2-1 victory for the club set them up for a tense encounter this past Wednesday, as Sao Paulo edged a penalty shootout following on from a 2-1 loss in regular time. Luciano da Rocha Neves scored from the spot for the away side.

Back in the league, however, Rogério Ceni's men are currently sitting in seventh and four points behind that of Fluminense having played the same amount of games. This comes after the club managed to rack up just five wins from 16 games, which has also seen the club score 20 goals and concede 16 of their own.

In fact, holding their own has not been the problem for Sao Paulo, as they have only lost three games all season long.

On the other hand, with eight draws, it’s clear to see where their issues are so far, and with now a four-point gap on the Copa Libertadores qualifiers spots, this has rapidly become one of the biggest games of the season for either side here.

Fluminense are also on a winning run of four games in the league too, as they've managed to defeat Avai 2-0, Botafogo 1-0, Cortinthians 4-0, before a recent 2-1 victory over Ceara.

Sao Paulo drew with Atletico Mineiro in their last Serie A game, and with a narrow win over Atletico Goianiense and a 0-0 draw with strugglers Juventude, they are not in the best form in the league.

Forbet predicts a draw here, and for the game to see under 2.5 goals with not much separating them in Serie A right now.
