Wednesday evening brings us action from the Belarusian Premier League and features this upcoming bottom half table clash between 9th placed Gomel and their 12th placed counterparts, Torpedo Zhodino, when the two teams face each other at the Stadyen Central’ny with both sides seeking to lift themselves up into the top half of the division.
Gomel have experienced a mixed start to the Belarus top flight campaign having produced W4, D3 and L4 in their opening 11 games of the season, which has placed them virtually mid-table in 9th place but they already trail the top three pack and 3rd placed BATE, by a significant nine-point margin.
Mixed results so far this season have certainly held Gomel back as the hosts have managed to pick up just one win out of their last seven matches overall, this coming in the form of a 1-0 home win against Dinamo Brest, but also being involved in three draws within this period as well as three defeats.
Goals have been something of a premium at home though as three of Gomel’s four home games have resulted in under 2.5 goals.
Torpedo Zhodino made a horrific start to their new Belarus top flight campaign as the visitors were handed defeats in each of their opening three games of the new term, suffering losses against Neman Grodno, Energetyk-BGU and Minsk respectively.
However, Zhodino have staged something of a recovery since that shaky start as the visitors have lost just two further games in their subsequent eight matches overall in the domestic Premier League and have also picked up four wins in the process.
Perhaps even more impressive is that three of these four aforementioned wins were also achieved away from home with victories at Dnepr Mogilev, Vitebsk and Shakhtyor, but their upcoming hosts, Gomel, have been a much tougher opponent in previous exchanges with very few goals separating the two sides.
Torpedo Zhodino have played seven of their 11 games away from home to date, five of which have seen under 2.5 goals scored in total, so goals may be scarce on Wednesday evening.
Indeed, eight out of the previous nine meetings between Gomel and Torpedo Zhodino have resulted in under 3 goals being scored and Wednesday’s encounter may also produce another low-scoring contest as well.
