This Saturday sees the final round of league matches in the German top flight and although there’s nothing riding on this upcoming clash between Mainz and Eintracht Frankfurt, with neither side being involved in European or relegation situations, both teams will nevertheless be keen to end their respective seasons on a positive note.
After having to endure a five-match winless run in the Bundesliga which consisted of three defeats and two draws; the losses coming in the shape of defeats at the hands of Augsburg, FC Cologne and Wolfsburg along with draws with Borussia M’gladbach and Stuttgart, Mainz have since staged a recovery.
Mainz have managed to bounce back in style by recording back to back wins against Bayern Munich 3-1 at home and a 2-1 win away at Hertha Berlin but goal-fests have been few and far between where Mainz have been concerned on home soil.
Four of Mainz’s last seven home games have seen under 2.5 goals scored, but nevertheless, Mainz have lost just twice at home all season, keeping nine clean sheets in the process.
Eintracht Frankfurt sit in 12th place on the Bundesliga ladder but the visitors have done enough to survive another season in the German top flight despite failing to win any of their last seven games overall.
Draws with RB Leipzig 0-0, Greuther Furth 0-0, Hoffenheim 2-2 and a 1-1 draw with Borussia M’gladbach have been offset by defeats to Freiburg, Union Berlin and Bayer Leverkusen.
But the visitors still hold an unassailable 11-point advantage over third from bottom outfit, Stuttgart, heading into this final day of the Bundesliga season.
Goals have also been in short supply where Eintracht Frankfurt have been concerned as five of the visitors’ last seven games have also resulted in under 2.5 goals.
And having managed to pick up just three wins out of their last 16 matches overall, it may be fair to say that an away win here seems unlikely.
The goals market therefore looks to be the most favourable option for this upcoming clash, especially as nine of Eintracht Frankfurt’s 16 away games to date this term have seen under 3 goals scored on the road.
In addition, the visitors have failed to score in each of their last three away games on the trot.
