There’s action from the French top flight on Wednesday night and it features the clash between Lille and Reims at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy with the hosts looking to avoid a third league defeat on the trot in Ligue 1.
Lille had previously lost just one of their opening four matches of this new French domestic season which came in the shape of a 4-0 loss to Nice but the current title-holders had seemingly steadied the ship with a point away from home in a 1-1 draw at Saint-Etienne, followed by a 2-1 home win over Montpellier.
However, Lille returned to square one after being handed back-to-back losses by Lorient and Lens which has left the hosts sitting in a lowly and disappointing 15th place on the Ligue 1 ladder prior to these midweek matches.
Goals could at least feature here though on Wednesday night as four of Lille’s six league matches to date have resulted in both teams scoring, while five of the last seven meetings against Reims have also seen both teams hit the back of the net.
Reims occupy a mid-table position of 11th place on the Ligue 1 ladder which is a fair reflection of the visitor’s results so far this season, as the draw has dominated their six matches to date this term.
The visitors have lost just once this season which came via a 2-0 defeat at home to PSG but draws with Nice, Montpellier, Metz and Lorient have seen Reims pick up some useful points along the way, along with a 2-0 win away from home at Rennes.
However, that win on the road at Rennes has been Reims’s only success for quite a while in the French top flight as the visitors have managed to win just one of their last 14 matches overall in Ligue 1 which may hold them back against Lille on Wednesday night.
Results away from home though have certainly been encouraging for Reims as they’ve suffered just the one defeat out of their last nine matches on the road and this will give Reims belief that they can get something from their trip to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Wednesday night where they’ll be looking to heap further misery upon the surprise strugglers this season.
Lille know they must start firing soon if they’re to challenge for a European spot while Reims have produced some good results away from home, so the prospects of both teams scoring here seem good.
