Brazil set for customary WCQ victory over Peru

In the early hours of Friday morning, Brazil welcome Peru to Arena Pernambuco in the next round of South American World Cup qualifiers.

Due to coronavirus complications, Brazil’s game against Argentina was suspended on Sunday, with health officials entering the pitch after just five minutes.

The match was postponed and will be played at a later date, meaning Brazil still boast a 100% record in the CONMEBOL WCQ group.

The Brazilians have won all seven of their qualifiers so far, scoring 17 goals while conceded just twice in the process.

Following July’s Copa America final defeat to Argentina, Brazil have lost just one of their previous 15 games in all competitions – sealing 13 wins along the way.

It is also worth pointing out that each of Brazil’s last four matches have ended 1-0, with under 2.5 goals coming in each of their previous five.

Brazil currently find themselves a whopping 13 points clear of seventh-place Peru in the CONMEBOL WCQ standings.

Peru have only managed to win two of their eight qualifiers up to now, recording two draws and four losses in the process.

Ricardo Gareca’s men are the third-lowest scorers in the group, having netted just eight goals in as many games.

It is also worth noting that only side – Bolivia – has conceded more goals in the South American qualifying group.

Following a 1-1 draw with Uruguay at the beginning of the month, the Peruvians secured a 1-0 victory over Venezuela last time out.

When you look at the bigger picture, though, Peru have only managed to win one of their past five games inside 90 minutes.

Head-to-head: In 50 meetings between the two sides, Peru have only managed to beat Brazil five times over the years.

The Brazilians have claimed 36 victories over the Peruvians, with all of the other nine matches ending in a draw.

During the 2021 Copa America, Brazil crushed Peru 4-0 in the group stage before beating them 1-0 in the semi-finals.

Team news: Brazil manager Tite is likely to stick with the same starting XI that he selected for Sunday’s suspended match against Argentina, with Gabriel Barbosa partnering Neymar in attack.

Having netted last time out, Peru attacking midfielder Christian Cueva will go in search of his third international goal of the year on Friday.

Although Peru have picked up a number of positive results of late, it is pretty clear that Brazil are far stronger. Indeed, you only have to look at their head-to-head record.
