Peru will be hoping for a change of their fortunes in the World Cup qualifiers when they play host to Uruguay on Thursday evening at the Estadio Nacional de Lima in Peru’s capital as the hosts look to pick themselves up from bottom place in the South American section of the World Cup qualifying table.
Peru were the surprise-package in the recent Copa America tournament though.

The hosts will be hoping that their performances in this tournament can rub off in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, starting on Thursday night.
During the group stage, Peru recorded wins against Colombia and Venezuela and held Ecuador to a 2-2 draw, while also beating the latter nation last time out in a World Cup qualifier back in June, but they’d suffered four defeats on the trot in their preceding matches.
Losses to Brazil 4-2, Chile 2-0, Argentina 2-0 and a heavy 3-0 loss to Colombia perhaps suggest that this upcoming fixture against Uruguay could also pose Peru a few problems despite holding home advantage.
Uruguay went out of the Copa America at the quarter-final stage of the competition, losing on penalties to Colombia after the scores were level at 0-0 after the normal 90m minutes.
This means that the visitors have lost just one of their last seven matches in all competitions in normal time.
Within this seven-match period, Uruguay have lost just once which was to the eventual winners of the Copa America, Argentina, but wins against Bolivia and Paraguay along with draws against Paraguay, Venezuela and Chile should stand them in good stead for this upcoming trip to Peru in Lima.
Results in World Cup qualifiers have also been encouraging from Uruguay’s point of view as the visitors have lost just two of their last 10 qualifiers overall, which came in the shape of defeats to Ecuador and Brazil, but four wins and four draws underline how tough it is to beat them.
Uruguay have also suffered just one defeat out of their last five qualifiers on their travels as well, while also picking up wins on the road at Paraguay 2-1 and Colombia 3-0 along with draws at Venezuela, so they look set to get something out of this fixture at the Estadio Nacional de Lima.
