Cagliari to take honours against Spezia

This weekend sees the start of a new Italian Serie A season and the action continues on Monday night when Cagliari play host to Spezia at their Unipol Domus ground with the hosts looking to make a positive start to their campaign.

Despite losing their final game of last season, Cagliari avoided relegation by a four-point margin and this was largely thanks to the hosts putting in a concerted effort in the latter stages of last season.

Cagliari put together what proved to be a season-saving run of seven matches without defeat which consisted of four wins and three draws which effectively saved the hosts’ skin and preserve their Serie A status for another season.

Victories over Parma, Udinese, Roma and Benevento were the main contributors to Cagliari avoiding relegation while points picked up in draws with Napoli, Fiorentina and AC Milan were equally important to Cagliari’s Italian top flight survival.

Cagliari had earlier looked to be heading for the trap-door though as the hosts failed to win any of their preceding nine games prior to a fightback which saw the hosts win three of their final seven home games of the season.

Spezia also found themselves in the bottom half of Serie A towards the end of last season as the visitors found league wins hard to come by in the latter stages of the campaign, winning just one of their final eight games of last term.

However, an impressive 4-1 home win against Torino was backed up with four draws with Inter Milan, Verona, Sampdoria and Roma which effectively meant that Spezia were never really seriously threatened by relegation.

Nevertheless, having registered just three wins from their last 16 matches overall in the Italian top flight, all of which were achieved on home turf at their Stadio Alberto Picco with victories over Monday’s opponents, Cagliari, along with wins against Crotone and Torino, this means their results away from home were rather ordinary.

Indeed, this was certainly the case as Spezia failed to win any of their last eight away matches of last season, losing six of these games and along with failing to score in three of these matches, the visitors also conceded a total of 20 goals in the process and also conceded 2 goals or more in seven of these eight games also.

Cagliari therefore stand a decent chance of a result here given Spezia’s leaky defence.
