A resounding 5-1 win in the 1st leg on home turf at their Philips Stadion set PSV up nicely for victory and they duly delivered again in the return leg in Turkey by beating their hosts 2-1 to set up this 3rd qualifying round tie with Midtjylland.
Overall results have been extremely positive for PSV as the Dutch hosts are unbeaten in their last 13 matches in all competitions and they’ve suffered just the one defeat from their previous 19 games as well.
PSV would perhaps want greater consistency in terms of results on the Champions League stage but the hosts have won three of their last four ties overall, which includes wins against Basel and home and away victories over Galatasaray.
Onto Midtjylland and the Danish visitors had to endure a much tighter affair against Scottish Premiership giants, Celtic, in the previous round of these Champions League qualifiers, needing extra-time to beat The Hoops in the return leg at their MCH Arena last week.
Midtjylland had previously held Celtic to a creditable 1-1 draw away from home in Glasgow at Celtic Park and they eventually sneaked through to this 3rd qualifying round stage of the competition.
Victories in the Danish Superliga either side of that 2nd leg win over Celtic against Aalborg and Viborg makes it three wins on the trot overall but this upcoming 1st leg tie in Eindhoven on Tuesday night is likely to be Midtjylland’s biggest test for some time.
Having managed to win just one of their last eight ties overall on the Champions League stage, Midtjylland may struggle to get the better of this PSV outfit, especially over the course of two legs as the quality of their hosts is expected to come out on top here.
Midtjylland are also without a win in their last five ties on the road at this level too, so thee Danes could have their work cut out here.
PSV are in great form at the moment and the comprehensive manner in which they disposed of Galatasaray in the previous round doesn’t bode well for Midtjylland here.
