Fortuna Dusseldorf have made a promising start to their new season as encouraging results in their pre-season friendlies continued in last week’s opening game of the German Bundesliga 2 campaign with a 2-0 win away from home at Sandhausen to give Dusseldorf the perfect start.
Previously, Fortuna Dusseldorf had produced some solid displays in their warm-up matches which saw the hosts inflict heavy defeats upon lower league outfit, Meerbusch, in a 11-0 demolition along with a 3-0 defeat over Belgian side, OH Leuven.

In-between, Dusseldorf were held to a 2-2 draw with Cypriot outfit, AEL, in another pre-season friendly before picking up that aforementioned 2-0 win away at Sandhausen on the opening day of the new season.
The bigger picture shows that Fortuna Dusseldorf have lost just two of their last 13 matches overall in all competitions, both of which were actually away from home with losses at Paderborn and Greuther Furth in last season’s Bundesliga 2, while results at home have been pretty reliable with Dusseldorf losing just two of their last 19 matches on home turf in the league.
Newly-relegated Werder Bremen were made to wait to register their first win of this season’s Bundesliga 2 campaign last weekend after being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Hannover in what would have been a disappointing start for Bremen.
It turned out to be a disastrous campaign for Werder Bremen in last season’s Bundesliga as the visitors were sent down into the German second tier following a poor run of results towards the end of last term.
Werder Bremen lost six out of their last seven matches of last season’s run-in, losing to RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund, Mainz, Union Berlin, Augsburg and Borussia Moenchengladbach which was a particularly punishing sequence of fixtures.
They did manage to hold Bayer Leverkusen to a 0-0 draw at home but the damage had been done by then and a point turned out to be ineffective in the end.
Fortuna Dusseldorf have won two of the previous three meetings against Werder Bremen and the hosts look capable of securing a second win of the season at home on Saturday evening as well, having got themselves off to a good start.
