It’s still early days in this Brazilian Serie A season but this Sunday’s encounter between Sport Recife and Palmeiras at the Estádio Adelmar da Costa Carvalho features two sides that have experienced contrasting fortunes to date in the domestic top flight.
Sport Recife find themselves in the bottom half of the Serie A table after managing to pick up just the one win so far in this campaign, which came in the shape of a narrow 1-0 home win against the basement dwellers, Gremio.

However, three draws and four defeats have overshadowed Sport Recife’s modest success so far this term and since that win, Sport Recife have suffered defeats to Juventude and Corinthians while also picking up single points in draws with Cuiaba and Santos.
The bigger picture shows that Sport Recife have registered just one win from their previous 11 matches overall in the Brazilian top flight, a poor sequence of results which include six defeats.
In addition, Sport Recife have won just one of their last six games at home and they’ve lost each of their last four meetings at home on the trot against Sunday’s visitors, Palmeiras, as well.
By contrast, Palmeiras jumped into 3rd place on the Serie A ladder thanks to a 2-1 win away from home at Internacional which swiftly followed their previous 3-2 home victory over Bahia.
After an opening day 1-0 defeat away at Flamengo, Palmeiras have responded in positive fashion by losing just one further game in their subsequent seven matches overall, this coming in a 3-1 loss at league leaders, Bragantino.
However, five wins within this recent seven-match turnaround has given Palmeiras an important boost and has helped lift the visitors up into the upper echelons of the Serie A table where they currently occupy one of the CONMEBOL Libertadores spots.
Victories over Chapecoense, Juventude, America Mineiro, Bahia and Internacional suggest Palmeiras may well be too strong for their Sunday’s hosts, Sport Recife, once again as the visitors look to home in on top spot.
With just two points separating Palmeiras from the early league leaders, Bragantino, Palmeiras will fancy their chances of picking up another valuable three points here on Sunday afternoon, especially as they’ve won their last four visits on the trot at Sport Recife.
